Why We Are a Benefit Corporation

OurWorlds was founded in November 2020 with a mission to use emerging technologies to support place-based storytelling—in a phrase, to illuminate the Indigenous worlds around us. History, language, and culture are not just content—they are living systems we are committed to honoring through immersive experiences and educational tools. As a California Benefit Corporation, OurWorlds dedicates a portion of annual profits to support Indigenous creators and STEM education for Native youth. This commitment is embedded in our corporate charter and reflected in our annual impact reports.

We are formally committed to donate the equivalent of 5% of revenues or more to charitable partners each year. In 2024, that figure rose to 47%, as our projects themselves became vehicles for economic empowerment, cultural expression, and community-led storytelling—proof that our model not only centers Indigenous voices, but sustains them.

We also commit 5% of our time annually to further support Indigenous storytelling, cultural work, advisement, and STEM education through volunteering. Wherever possible, we pursue projects that help ensure that Indigenous communities benefit directly from participation, self-determination, and impact.
