On March 9, 2021, San Diego Unified School District voted to change the name of Juniperro Serra High School to Mat Kwatup KunKun, the Kumeyaay translation for Canyon Hills High School. The effort was led by sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila, students at the school, who started an online petition to change the school's mascot in 2020.
