Ha Kwaiyo at La Jolla Shores on Native American Heritage Day

Join us Thursday, November 18 to help celebrate the UC San Diego Design Lab Grand Opening! Two events that day: the Design Lab is open for in-person visits 12-3pm. We will be on hand to demo the app live. Register here

Then at 8pm we will be presenting a YouTube Livestream from the Design Lab as part of the second Ocean Prototype Nights. We are honored to be in conversation with Dr. Stanley Rodriguez about his ha kwaiyo (tule boat) projects and Our Worlds. We will be discussing how we are working together to preserve the tradition of tule boat making in extended reality.

Learn about the process of creating a tule boat, how the boats were traditionally used, and be inspired about this and other sustainable technologies and practices of the Kumeyaay people in coastal San Diego. Our Worlds will provide a sneak peek of some of our XR360º extended reality experiences planned for Thanksgiving and Comic-Con on our iOS app beta. Sign up now if you have not yet had a chance to download.

Dr. Rodriguez is a member of the Board of Trustees and Professor at Kumeyaay Community College, also teaches at Cal State San Marcos, and is a renowned cultural authority on Kumeyaay culture and language.

Thank you to Graphic Ocean's Lisa Cartwright, Professor of Visual Arts, Communication and Science Studies and Director of Art Practice at UC San Diego and Nan Renner, Senior Director of Learning Design and Innovation at Birch Aquarium. With Kilma Lattin and Catherine Eng.
