The Type M1917 steel helmet, was the first protective helmet of it's kind and was adopted by the United States in World War I. It symbolizes the vulnerability of soldiers on the battlefield. Modeled after the British shallow-dome design by John L. Brodie, it offered only basic protection against the constant hazards of war. Initially sourced from Britain until the U.S. factories could ramp up production, the American version modified the interior leather suspension and used a different steel alloy. This single-piece, stamped steel helmet was issued to all U.S. soldiers and Marines in France. Many of them would personalize their helmets with their painted unit insignia. The helmet's limited protection showcases just how exposed soldiers remained, relying on modest defenses as they faced life-threatening conditions daily.
