WWI Bacon Keeper

The M-1916 bacon can, made of tinned iron, held uncooked reserve meat rations and was a crucial part of a soldier’s limited food supply. Its lid, secured by friction, kept the contents sealed while the can was stored upright in the haversack to prevent grease from soiling the rest of the gear. Once emptied, the can's interior was spacious enough to hold the M-1910 condiment can, optimizing space in the already overcrowded haversack. This design not only reflected the practical concerns of military logistics but also underscored the harsh realities of life on the battlefield, where every inch of space and every ounce of weight mattered in the struggle for survival.
